Navajo Rug Yarn Spinning
Traditional Navajo rug makers did not use a spinning wheel. Yarn was spun by sitting with the top of one of these spindles on the spinner thigh with her rolling it down her leg to make it spin while she controlled the supply of raw wool with her left hand. The mark of an expert spinner was yarn with a consistent diameter and no thick or thin spots. It is NOT easy to do. Spinning this way is slow. A good weaver can keep 5-10 spinners busy. These days it is much easier to buy yarn already spun.
