Navajo Rug Loom Bottom Front
This picture of the front bottom gives you an idea of what the finished Navajo rug will look like. You can see how the continuous warp thread goes around the heavy dowl at the bottom and how that is wired to the heavy cross piece at the bottom of the loom. The heavy wood is needed because the stretched rug puts a lot of force onto the loom.
Keep in mind this front side is what will be up when this rug is placed on the floor. As you will see in the following pictures, the weaver’s view from the back side is quite different.
The yarn in the plastic bag shows some samples of wool dyed with natural materials. In this particular rug the red and black colors are almost certainly from commercial dyes. The white is probably commercial white yard. The gray could be natural colored wool with no dye.
